When I worked in Nigeria, I had the great pleasure of working with Gordon. In South Sudan, we were reunited again. He has a remarkable way of explaining and talking with people, instantly bringing calm and clarity. I still remember when he spoke to the team in Nigeria, encouraging them with the first saying below. Since I have gotten to spend more time with him, I have added to his list, and am delighted by the way he uses analogies, adages, and idioms:

  • We have already swallowed the whole cow, will be let the tail defeat us?
  • We don't need to blow and anthill to make a mountain.
  • By the end of the day, I'm like a pancake, heated from all sides.
  • If you have a big hole that you want to fill, you must dig another hole to fill it. And then you have another big hole to fill...I don't want to be filling holes for the rest of my life.
  • When you are drowning, you will grab for anything, even a a straw of grass.

This will be an ongoing list. As I hope to interact with Gordon continuously over the years, I will add his bits of wisdom as they come through!
