Tihar: Kukur Tihar (Dog Blessing)

Tihar is a five day festival celebrated in Nepal (similar to the Deepawali festival celebrated in India). It is the festival of lights, and candles are lit throughout the country, colorful lights hung from every building, and the celebration of humans, gods and animals is embraced. Each day pays tribute to a different animal or god. The second day of the festival is is kukur tihar, or dog blessing, where dogs, seen as messengers for the God of Death, are blessed with red tikkas on their head an adorned with marigold garlands.

I went on a morning walk around my neighborhood on kukur tihar and watched families circle incense around their pups heads, place flowers around their necks, and give the honored tikka.
